UK airport set to generate its own energy

East Midlands Airport has announced plans to become the latest UK-based business to unveil strategies to reduce its carbon footprint.

A spokesperson for the airport has revealed that proposals to install wind turbines on the site have been in development recently.

It is thought the construction of a renewable energy source to generate electricity for the airport will supply about ten per cent of the site's total energy consumption.

The spokesperson added: "We were the first UK Airport to commit to making our ground operations carbon neutral by 2012 as well as the only UK airport to have successfully retained the international environment standard ISO14001 for four years running."

East Midlands Airport's plans have been unveiled as more business begin to consider ways to lower their carbon emissions and save energy on overall energy bills.

In the past few days, BT has unveiled plans to power parts of its business using energy generated from turbines that are to be installed on several of the company's sites.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18323543-ADNFCR
